چکیده

Abstract The relativistic electron dynamics in the radiation belts falls into two categories: diffusive processes, which particles are scattered randomly, and advective collectively driven one direction energy or space. In this work, we focus on advection can occur a timescale faster than diffusion for CME shock compressions of dayside magnetosphere. Test-particle simulations done electric magnetic fields generated by LFM global MHD model, coefficient is calculated. Then, applied to transport equation with term included solved phase space density time evolution. calculation 17 March 2015 6–7 September 2017 CME-shock events, using realistic initial conditions measured Van Allen Probes, all showing inward motion electrons scale minutes. result compared calculated based full test-particle fields. shift found be comparable both methods, while solving much once coefficients modeled.

Atmospheric losses of radiation belt electrons

[1] A numerical model of the low-altitude energetic electron radiation belt, including the effects of pitch angle diffusion into the atmosphere and azimuthal drift, predicts lifetimes and longitude-dependent loss rates as a function of electron energy and diffusion coefficient. It is constrained by high-altitude ( 20,000 km) satellite measurements of the energy spectra and pitch angle distribut...

Enhanced radial transport and energization of radiation belt electrons due to drift orbit bifurcations

[1]Relativistic electron intensities in Earth's outer radiation belt can vary by multiple orders of magnitude on the time scales ranging from minutes to days. One fundamental process contributing to dynamic variability of radiation belt intensities is the radial transport of relativistic electrons across their drift shells. In this paper we analyze the properties of three-dimensional radial tra...

Pathways for advective transport

Advective transport in the ocean fundamentally is Lagrangian in nature. At model grid scales, this transport is parameterized by eddy or turbulent exchange coefficients in analogy to molecular diffusion. Nevertheless, much of the transport is by advection on scales larger than the grid cell yet smaller than basin scale. Moreover, flow at these scales tends to be nonstationary in time and irregu...

Incorporating spectral characteristics of Pc5 waves into three-dimensional radiation belt modeling and the diffusion of relativistic electrons

[1] The influence of ultralow frequency (ULF) waves in the Pc5 frequency range on radiation belt electrons in a compressed dipole magnetic field is examined. This is the first analysis in three dimensions utilizing model ULF wave electric and magnetic fields on the guiding center trajectories of relativistic electrons. A model is developed, describing magnetic and electric fields associated wit...

Radiation Belt

On July 9, 1962, at 0900 UT (Universal Time) a nuclear device of 1.4-megatons yield was detonated at 400 km above Johnston Island in the Pacific Ocean. Since the explosion took place in the trapping region of the magnetosphere, an artificial radiation belt of considerable intensity was produced. The possible sources of the radiation belt were: (I ) beta-decay electrons from the fission fragment...
